Chapter 1.2 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 12-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The potential for a Strategy as Practice (SAP) research agenda to benefit from Actor-Network theory (ANT) was noted early on (e.g., Steen et al., 2006). For a recent and more comprehensive discussion of the origins and subsequent development of this theoretical engagement than this short piece allows, readers might follow up in Chapman et al. (2025). In setting out the general contours of such an engagement between these two rich and evolving research agendas here, we begin with their founding preoccupations. We then briefly discuss some recent theoretical developments, highlighting that these maintain fruitful possibilities of connection between the two. We will conclude with some reflections on the distinctive potential for a critical edge to theorizing that the methodological foundations of the two approaches share.
