Chapter 2.4 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 121-124 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The concept of organisational ambidexterity suggests exploiting existing resources and capabilities and exploring new opportunities simultaneously. Achieving organisational ambidexterity supports the cycle of organisational renewal and endorses an organisation's sustainable, long-term survival. Reaching ambidexterity entails a variety of strategic decisions that practitioners need to make and processes they need to go through. Etymologically, the notion of “ambidexterity” is derived from the Latin “ambo”, signifying “both sides” and “dexter”, which conveys the idea of the right-hand side and also implies a sense of favourability. Thus, ambidexterity means using both hands with equal skill.
