Practice Turn

Peter Smith

Chapter 2.28 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 212-215 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The Practice Turn is a significant shift in the field of sociology that has placed practices at the heart of understanding and interpreting social phenomena. This shift is of fundamental importance to many Strategy-as-Practice scholars, as it offers a fresh perspective on understanding the social world. Rather than relying on abstract conceptualisations or dichotomous thinking, the Practice Turn emphasises the role of practices—regular activities found across the daily lives of individuals—as the building blocks of the social world. This approach moves away from traditional theories that often focus on individual minds and social structures, and instead, it highlights the importance of everyday practices in shaping our social reality.
