Abstract:
The “strategic episode” is a prominent concept in SAP research. It describes a sequence of actions during which the ordinary structures and routines of the wider context, in which the episode is embedded, are, at least partially, suspended. Examples of strategic episodes are strategy workshops, digital strategy jams, strategy meetings or pilot projects, which suspend for the time being the ordinary organizational processes and hierarchical structures, opening up a space for new structures to emerge for the time being. In the following, we describe the origins of the concept of strategic episodes, outline its relation to similar concepts such as liminality and reflective and experimental spaces, and describe how the concept has been applied in empirical research. We close with three avenues for future research on strategic episodes.
