Action research
Robert MacIntosh
Chapter 3.1 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 285-288 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
For those studying Strategy-as-Practice (SAP), action research might seem a natural methodological choice. Action research involves working directly alongside strategists in real time in a process where researcher(s) and organisational members collaborate with the overt intention to influence outcomes. Why then, is action research not more popular amongst SAP or indeed in management and organisation studies more generally? To explore why this is the case requires a brief review of the method, its evolution and its suitability for the study of strategy and strategists.
