Abstract:
As a prominent approach to collecting data for qualitative research, interviews have been adopted to study a wide range of phenomena in the field of strategy and management, including organizational change, strategic decision-making, managerial cognition and sensemaking, and identity and subjectivity, among others. Since Strategy as Practice (SAP) is essentially concerned with the activities of strategy actors, i.e., their sayings and doings, interviews have been mobilized as a significant method to closely examine those activities, often in combination with other methods, particularly ethnographic observations (ethnography) and archival data. Interviews provide SAP researchers with an effective way to closely examine people's lived experiences, such as their activities, observations, motivations, and understandings, which are sometimes difficult or impossible to capture with other methods. In this entry, we discuss the purposes, challenges, and future opportunities of using interviews in SAP research.
