Photographic approaches

Chapter 3.12 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 328-332 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Understanding what organizational members do as well as say is a foundational concept in Strategy as Practice (SAP) literature. Photographic approaches are well-suited to study SAP because collecting and analyzing images can reflect organizational member activities related to the strategy formation processes (Smith, Beorchia, & Jung, 2025). We propose that photographic methods can capture visible aspects of organizational life, such as strategic activities, unobserved through other means. In this entry, we present photographic methodological designs and analytical approaches that SAP researchers can consider to generate unique theoretical and practical contributions. We first review how photographs have been used in prior SAP research. Then, we present four photographic methodological designs that can be applied to SAP studies. We next share several techniques to analyze photographic data. Our aim is to present researchers with photographic methodology options that can be tailored to their unique research questions.
