Abstract:
Much of the prior Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) research has been of conceptual nature or mobilized qualitative research methodologies for studying the practices, praxis and practitioners involved in strategizing behaviors. While the importance of these methodologies for theory-building is incontestable, the overreliance on a single dominant approach to research can also hinder the research area from reaching its full potential. As SAP research has evolved towards higher levels of maturity and entered an increasingly consolidated phase, opportunities for theory-testing approaches and more quantitative research designs have emerged. As the concepts under investigation and the relationships between them have become more refined and precise over time, quantitative research designs can be used to further assist in also enhancing the understanding of the broader statistical generalizability of the findings across different contexts and for establishing boundary conditions. For example, calls have been made to examine the measurable performance implications of firms’ adoption of specific strategy practices. Quantitative methods can also be used to examine macro-level patterns emerging inductively from micro-level data.
