Discourse theory

Chapter 1.8 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 34-37 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The inherent connection of discourse with context and practice makes it a particularly valuable perspective for strategy as practice research (Brown & Thompson, 2013; Vaara, 2010). Indeed, discursive studies form one of six thematic clusters in strategy as practice research in addition to praxis, sensemaking, sociomateriality, institutional and process studies (Kohtamäki et al., 2022). In this entry we examine historical and 20th-century antecedents of discourse theory, move to a discussion of discourse in strategy and organization scholarship, and conclude with reference to levels of analysis when employing discourse in strategy and organization research.
