Visual methods

Chapter 3.20 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 361-364 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) is rooted in a sociological view of organization. However, visual sociology is an often marginalized field compared to mainstream sociology, which has long prioritized verbal methods – partly because of a view that images are more ephemeral, but also because of high publishing costs for images and intellectual property concerns over image reproduction. Visual methods are gaining popularity in the recent visual turn in organization studies, with journal norms evidently evolving towards accepting visual work. Research streams are based on descriptive methods, discursive analysis, ethnographic/sociomaterial approaches, semiotics, organizational identity, image management, symbolism and aesthetics. Strategy-related visual research is more embryonic, represented in the first five streams. However, it is gaining ground as part of a parallel focus on everyday practices.
