Chapter 13 in Theories and Concepts in Work and Employment Relations, 2025, pp 116-123 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the outcomes for employment relations from the continuing application of the principles of the marketisation of public services, influenced by the values and practices of New Public Management (NPM). The focus is on the UK where, despite NPM's influence, there is not complete convergence with private sector models. At the time of writing, a new Labour government has entered power at the end of a significant period of public sector industrial action, including strikes by teachers, civil servants, higher education, junior doctors, consultants and nurses. NPM, marketisation and austerity remain contested.
