Exit, voice, loyalty and neglect: issues and developments in employee voice and the EVLN framework
Michael Barry
Chapter 28 in Theories and Concepts in Work and Employment Relations, 2025, pp 243-250 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Employee voice is a major topic of interest across the related fields of Employment Relations, Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour (OB). However, what voice actually means varies considerably across these disciplines. This chapter traces the evolution of voice, showing how the Exit/Voice/Loyalty/Neglect (EVLN) framework was developed as a common framework for voice research in the 1980s and 1990s. The chapter also discusses the departure of OB research from this traditional framework, and what implications that has for contemporary research on employee voice and silence, and for the continuing relevance of the EVLN framework.
