The case of al-Shabaab's gendered economy

Chapter 10 in Women and War Economies, 2025, pp 177-202 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 10 looks at al-Shabaab's gendered war economy. This chapter homes in on one particular armed group, looking at the ways this group generates funds, examining how its war economy endeavours are gendered, and the parts that women play in the group's income-generation activities. It also describes the gendered ways in which al-Shabaab expends its resources, explaining how funds are used to support the gendered way of life the group puts forward. The chapter looks at some of the apparent contradictions between the group's approach to women and its economic endeavours, such as the group's formal prohibition on women working, coupled with its reliance on women in its own business endeavours.
