Reflections on women in war economies
Orly Maya Stern ()
Chapter 11 in Women and War Economies, 2025, pp 203-217 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 11 conducts an analysis of the material presented in the book. It examines what this teaches us about women in war economies; in terms of women's active participation in war economies, how women are victimised and affected by war economies, and how women's participation and victimisation intersect. The chapter describes the ways in which women's participation is essential to the functioning of war economies, considering the critical roles played by women, the tasks that women are better able to perform than men, and the ways that armed groups take advantage of this. The chapter also considers where sex comes into war economies. It looks at the gendered logic inherent in the actions of armed groups, examining how the mistreatment of women can be profitable and can make economic sense to fighting groups. Finally, it considers how women's treatment by armed groups can conflict with groups’ stated goals, questioning what this tells us about armed groups and how they operate in war economies.
