Women, economies, and war
Orly Maya Stern ()
Chapter 3 in Women and War Economies, 2025, pp 38-64 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 3 looks at women, economies, and war. It considers the relationship between gender and conflict, describing the link between gender inequality and armed conflict, before examining the gendered effects of conflict. It then focusses more specifically on the gendered economic effects of conflict, demonstrating how gender influences the ways in which men and women experience the economic consequences of war. The chapter then examines what feminist scholars have to say about women, war, and economies, and on women and “war economies” specifically – summarising the limited existing scholarship on this topic. Finally, this chapter describes the literature on women and crime – a literature focussed on crime in peacetime, yet which is to date still undeveloped in relation to wartime crime.
