Women and the smuggling of migrants
Orly Maya Stern ()
Chapter 8 in Women and War Economies, 2025, pp 147-158 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 8 looks at the smuggling of migrants. It describes the human smuggling trade, particularly as this pertains to armed conflict, and considers the relationship between this trade and war economies. It explains how gender affects the experience of being smuggled, describing the experiences of female migrants, and the ways in which they are abused and exploited during these processes. The chapter then looks at what is known about women as perpetrators and collaborators in human smuggling operations.
