Women, cross-border trade, and goods smuggling
Orly Maya Stern ()
Chapter 9 in Women and War Economies, 2025, pp 159-176 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 9 looks at cross border trade and smuggling in conflict. The chapter looks at the significance of borders in war economies, and describes the importance of cross-border trade, as well as smuggling in war economies – in helping armed groups attain the goods they require, in facilitating other war economy endeavours, and in securing the goods that populations under armed groups’ control need to survive. The chapter then considers the parts that women play in cross-border trade and smuggling in conflicts, before describing how armed groups deploy women into these roles, or conduct business with female traders, to secure the goods they need – with women playing important parts in some armed actors’ cross-border movements. The chapter also looks at the gendered effects of border restrictions imposed in conflicts.
