Agritourism: the agriculture-tourism marriage
Carla Barbieri
Chapter 1 in Rethinking Agritourism, 2026, pp 2-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Agritourism emerged as a form of agricultural enterprise designed to diversify farmers’ income stream and stimulate rural development by welcoming visitors to the farm. Doing so leverages the recreational and educational functions that working farms provide to society beyond the production of food and fiber. This chapter first delves into the agricultural multifunctionality framework and key definitional elements of agritourism emerging from the integration of agriculture and tourism. It then elaborates on the Agritourism System that captures the complexity of the agriculture-tourism intersectionality and its effects on farmers, farm families, and society. This chapter concludes by discussing a multi-stakeholder initiative from the Global Agritourism Network to identify core values of agritourism that served as foundational pillars to craft a global definition of agritourismm.
