Identity within the agritourism mosaic
Carla Barbieri
Chapter 2 in Rethinking Agritourism, 2026, pp 15-28 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Agritourism encompasses an amalgam of offerings (experiences, services, activities) resulting from the mix of farm resources enhanced by the natural and cultural values of their surrounding communities. The identity of agritourism farms, thus their differentiation within and across destinations, is shaped by the creativity with which providers integrate their agricultural production and resources into their offerings. This chapter begins by outlining the elements that define the mosaic and identity of agritourism offerings to later describe existing scholarly classifications. It then highlights a few thematic specializations which predominance made stand on their own. The chapter concludes by presenting the Investment and Agritourism Specialization Quadrants, a tool to inform programming, development, and policy to further support and advance the agritourism industry.
