The plentiful yield of the agritourism harvest
Carla Barbieri
Chapter 3 in Rethinking Agritourism, 2026, pp 29-46 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Agritourism delivers an array of economic, environmental, and socio-cultural benefits and services. Building upon the Agritourism System framework, this chapter begins by describing how agritourism fulfills various farmers’ entrepreneurial motivations, supports the wellbeing of the farm household, and generates economic and non-economic positive spillover effects to broader society. Then, it delves into a range of challenges stemming from the farmer, farm household, and the broader macro context that should be overcome to maximize the benefits of agritourism. This chapter concludes by outlining a series of private and public interventions that are essential to address common obstacles hindering agritourism development, thus increasing the chances of its success.
