Stretching the agritourism panorama

Carla Barbieri

Chapter 7 in Rethinking Agritourism, 2026, pp 97-111 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The global growth of agritourism calls for recognizing travel experiences centered on agricultural livelihoods beyond prevailing Western parameters regarding the scope of agriculture, tenure systems, and worldviews. This chapter delves into forms of agritourism centered on unconventional farming practices (e.g., aquaculture, agroforestry) and spaces beyond the farmland (e.g., water bodies, treed patches), governed under common and public tenure regimes. Embracing communal and circular worldviews, this chapter also posits that agritourism can be broadened to bring together multiple providers and encompass artistic, cultural, and religious expressions integral to agricultural lifestyles. This chapter concludes by showcasing themed routes as an expanded form of agritourism, stressing that their success requires transitioning to a Coopetition strategy to enhance the overall destination pull capacity.
