The macro agritourism system
Carla Barbieri
Chapter 8 in Rethinking Agritourism, 2026, pp 112-128 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The contributions of agritourism to providers and society can be amplified by seeking synergies with three ongoing social trends: Social farming (use of agriculture to deliver social and health services): neolocalism (production-consumption model revaluing localness); and creative placemaking (incorporation of local arts and culture to elicit place revitalization). This chapter outlines each of these trends, describing how agritourism can tap into them either directly or indirectly, as well as the benefits and challenges such synergies can bring to agritourism providers, their communities, and society. This chapter concludes by summarizing how creativity and meaning interplay with local resources to foster niche tourism development, which can guide agritourism advancement, particularly in emerging destinations.
