Peeking into the future of agritourism
Carla Barbieri
Chapter 9 in Rethinking Agritourism, 2026, pp 129-140 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter elaborates on major factors—environmental degradation, increased urban human population concentration, and cultural shifts—that may shape the future of agritourism. While these factors may polarize agricultural spaces into niche and industrial farming with limited middle ground, they will also intensify the need for farm spaces to fulfill a fluid range of recreational needs, from hedonism (pure recreation) to eudaimonia (personal enhancement), and further expand opportunities for agritourism development. This chapter also summarizes elements of agritourism theory that have been pivotal to informing its practice and identifies scholarly gaps that should be filled to further support outreach, advocacy, and policy to strengthen agritourism. This chapter concludes by outlining a five-phase analytical framework to evaluate agritourism suitability for a farmer and the farm household.
