The flexibility paradox: revisiting a decade of tensions

Abstract: This chapter examines persistent and evolving tensions within flexible work through a paradox lens. It explores how previously established tensions – fixed versus variable schedules, supportive versus unsupportive climates, equitable versus inequitable implementation, and autonomy versus organisational control – have evolved over the past decade. Our analysis underlines how these tensions have diminished, intensified, or transformed due to technological advances, shifting priorities, and broader macro-level factors. We also reflect on how employees, managers and organisations continually navigate these tensions, with responses that can lead to positive and negative outcomes. The chapter highlights flexibility's dual paradoxical forces and shows how tensions are complex, interwoven, and reflect societal norms and cultural expectations. It outlines future research directions, advocates a focus on new tensions and adaptive responses, and offers insights to inform the debate on managing the paradox of flexible working in a post-pandemic environment.
