Chapter 13 in A Research Agenda for Flexible Working Arrangements, 2025, pp 201-210 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, we draw together the reflections presented in the preceding chapters on where further research is needed and propose priorities for the future research agenda on flexible working arrangements. The chapter explores the evolution of research outcomes in the field, highlighting the various tensions that challenge employers and flexible workers themselves, and consequently influence outcomes. Key themes raised throughout the book chapters are revisited, which include the conceptualisation and contextualisation of flexible working arrangements, inequities in access and experiences of employees, and ongoing tensions. Further, we argue that the dynamic nature of flexible working arrangements and desired outcomes at different time frames need to be considered in the design of future studies. This relates to the clarity of and the distinction between different and emerging forms of flexibility and desired outcomes.
