Introduction to the Handbook on Inequality in China

Björn Gustafsson and Xiuna Yang

Chapter 1 in Handbook on Inequality in China, 2025, pp 1-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter serves as an introduction to the book. In the first half, the book's editors provide an overview of the profound transformations in China's economy and the evolution of its social policies. The chapter outlines the main topics addressed in the book and introduces the datasets employed to shed light on these issues. The second part of this chapter summarizes the content and conclusions of each subsequent chapter. Over the past four to five decades, China has experienced remarkable economic and social transformations. Household incomes have risen at an unprecedented pace, and the economy has transitioned from a centrally planned system to a market-oriented one, albeit with the state maintaining a significant role. The country's demographic profile has also undergone dramatic changes, with the majority of the population now living in urban areas rather than rural areas. These transformations have significantly deepened our understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by Chinese households.
