Child inequality in China

Chapter 14 in Handbook on Inequality in China, 2025, pp 320-349 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The unequal development among children is a global concern, each country facing unique challenges shaped by its specific cultural, social, and political context. In contemporary China, children's developmental outcomes are shaped by the rural-urban divide and influenced by large-scale internal migration, both of which are closely linked to institutional constraints of the hukou system. Additionally, rising inequality in Chinese society has made parental socioeconomic status an increasingly significant factor driving disparities in child development. This chapter systematically reviews recent studies on children's development from these three perspectives (rural-urban divide, internal migration, and parental socioeconomic status), aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of inequality among children in contemporary China. By examining the key patterns and trends and exploring the underlying causes, the chapter aims to identify disadvantaged children and offers policy recommendations to enhance their well-being.
