Inequality of health opportunity in China: What do we know?

Chapter 9 in Handbook on Inequality in China, 2025, pp 194-218 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
China has experienced unprecedented economic growth over the past four decades, along with a remarkable increase in average life expectancy. However, with rapid economic development and population aging, China is also undergoing a health or epidemiological transition from communicable diseases to noncommunicable diseases. Notably, health inequalities are prevalent and are particularly evident among older people. This chapter thus provides a comprehensive discussion of the recent literature on health inequality, with a specific focus on inequality of opportunity (IOp) in health in China. After summarizing the measurement of IOp in health, we discuss the developments in the empirical literature and then document IOp in health among the older population in China using data from the 2011–2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Finally, we synthesize key findings and limitations and conclude by identifying several future research avenues.
