Violent crime and society: An overview

Wendy C. Regoeczi and Terance D. Miethe

Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 2-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter synthesizes the contributions to this handbook by highlighting the multifaceted nature of violent crime and its significant impact on individuals, communities and societies. While emphasizing how much diversity exists in forms of violence—ranging from high-profile violent acts such as mass murder, firearm violence and serial killings to more underexplored areas such as corporate violence, cyberviolence and violence against older adults—the chapter situates these issues within interdisciplinary research fields that include criminology, sociology, psychology and public health. We summarize some of the challenges of studying violence, such as inconsistencies in data collection and definitions and obstacles to cross-national comparability and stress the lack of robust evidence for effective interventions for some types of violence. The chapter highlights the societal and policy implications of violent crime and its specific forms and underscores the importance of comprehensive, evidence-based strategies to prevent and reduce violence.
