Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 170-188 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
There is a long tradition of research on sexual offending issues. In spite of this, misinformation in terms of myths, misperceptions, and erroneous conclusions characterizing public opinion, policymaking and criminal justice practices remain prevalent. This chapter highlights some challenges involved in the description, measurement, explanation and prevention of sexual offending. It is argued that two key components of sexual offending remain under-addressed, minimized or simply overlooked. First, sexual offending shares many similarities and commonalities with other antisocial and criminal behaviors, including criminogenic risk and need factors. Second, sexual offending is a moving target: a dynamic, multidimensional and multifactorial phenomenon. Times and people change and so is sexual offending, requiring social scientists to adapt and readjust their approach to monitor its evolution. It is suggested that a developmental life course perspective recognizing both the antisocial and dynamic nature of sexual offending could help improve the understanding and prevention of sexual offending.
