Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 189-209 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter delves into the international definition and manifestations of human trafficking as a form of violent crime. It explores the systemic, community and individual level factors driving vulnerability to trafficking, including inequality, discrimination, poverty, displacement and forced migration, climate change and conflict. It highlights the associated wide-ranging health, social and economic impacts, including physical and psychological harm, individual and national-level financial consequences, and stigmatisation, discrimination and the breakdown of community ties. Furthermore, it analyses the essential components of an effective government response, addressing current challenges and proposing potential solutions. Understanding these facets is crucial in formulating comprehensive strategies to combat human trafficking and its devastating impacts on individuals and societies.
