Chapter 13 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 210-223 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Research shows that people who deviate from heterosexual or cisgender identities/behaviors face significant experiences of criminal violence, some violence explicitly motivated by their sexual and gender diverse (SGD) identities or behaviors, but also revealing the complexity of the relationship between violence and being SGD. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the research on the prevalence of criminal violence against SGD people and communities, the prevailing theories about causes of that violence and the consequences to SGD people and communities. Finally, we explore potential solutions to decrease the prevalence of violence and to mitigate the consequences of experiencing violence.
