Abstract:
Firearm violence is a uniquely American crisis. When taking an international lens, comparisons reveal that the United States experiences firearm deaths at a much higher rate than other countries. As firearm violence in the United States becomes all too familiar, so too does the national dialogue on why it happens, and what can be done to ensure greater safety in communities, schools and intimate settings. In this chapter, we trace some of the complexities of firearm violence. We consider four types: community firearm violence, firearm-involved intimate partner violence, mass shootings, and, finally, officer-involved shootings. We examine the consequences of firearm violence for those directly victimized and the wider communities in which the violence exists. Finally, we look to intersecting solutions, consisting of community-based, policy and legislative practices, to potentially reduce the toll of firearm violence.
