Chapter 2 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 13-32 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the development and nature of data on violence over geographical areas and time. It reviews four different data sources on violence (i.e., police and other official records, self-reports of offending, victimization surveys, and open-source collections) and describes patterns of violence that derive from them. Questions about the reliability (i.e., consistency) and validity (i.e., representativeness) of these data are discussed in terms of their implications for substantive conclusions about trends in violence over time and assessing the effectiveness of various violence-prevention policies and practices.
