Chapter 20 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 318-336 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Though the true prevalence of prison violence remains another dark figure in the repertoire of criminological scholarship, these events cause physical and emotional damage to involved parties and witnesses. Both the lingering effects of experiencing violence and the perpetration of violence as a means of survival within prison create spillover effects that impact the communities in which releasees and staff reside. Prison violence is thus a public health issue. The present chapter reviews historical and current research on prison violence, focusing on the prevalence of victimization and perpetration for all persons exposed to prison life. We further review known theoretical and empirical causes of prison violence from individual and facility perspectives, with special attention to sexual victimization. We close this chapter with potential solutions to reduce violence in the most restrictive environment.
