College student victimization

Rebekkah L. Gross, Bonnie S. Fisher and John J. Sloan

Chapter 21 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 337-361 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Since the first college student victimization (CSV) study was published in 1957, several milestones have marked the trajectory of understanding and addressing CSV in the US. Over time, the study of CSV evolved through the collaborative and interconnected endeavors of federal and state elected officials and administrative agencies, researchers spanning diverse fields, grassroots advocates and national organizations. Together, these contributors have refined the definition and measurement of CSV, narrowed its focus to sexual violence, identified its correlates and consequences, assessed the efficacy of postsecondary institutional services and preventive strategies and implemented student bystander intervention training, all crucial aspects of CSV. This chapter presents an overview of the scope of CSV prevalence estimates and definitional issues underlying them, identifies and explains CSV risk and protective correlates and describes the consequences of CSV as well as prevention efforts seeking to reduce CSV prevalence.
