Robbery

Amy Burrell and Sarah Wüllenweber

Chapter 24 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 394-411 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Robbery is the theft of property with the threat or use of violence and can be targeted against businesses (commercial/business robbery) or individuals (personal robbery). Violence can be verbal or physical and weapons – including knives and firearms – might be displayed or used. This chapter will provide a summary of prevalence statistics for robbery (extent) before exploring the individual, socio-cultural and situational factors associated with robbery. Target selection is discussed in detail, including the factors associated with vulnerability – for example, reduced ability to fight back or report. The physical and psychological consequences of the offence are outlined as well as the social and economic costs. The final section outlines a range of methods and tactics for tackling robbery (solutions), including early intervention and offender-led approaches, situational approaches and policing tactics.
