Abstract:
Abstract Violence is highly concentrated in a small number of places, committed by and against a small number of chronic offenders and tends to occur at specific times of the day. These violent crime concentrations provide important opportunities for police to develop initiatives for deterring and preventing violence. Hot spots policing, problem-oriented policing and focused deterrence have been found to be effective at controlling violence. Strengthening criminal investigations of violent offenders also seems to be a promising approach to reducing violent crime. Police departments need to ensure that implemented violence reduction initiatives do not generate unintended harms to the communities they serve, such as racial disparities and excessive use of the criminal justice system. Fair and effective policing to reduce violence requires careful planning and management, community engagement and training to ensure lawful and respectful behavior by officers.
