Chapter 35 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 574-595 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
An examination of death penalty practices in the United States and internationally suggests a world-wide movement toward abolition. This chapter investigates the use of capital punishment in the United States and around the world. We first provide current state trends in the United States which suggest a country steadily moving toward abolition. We offer the foundational Supreme Court cases that have shaped the application of the death penalty for the past 50 years. We then shift our focus to the use of the death penalty across the globe within a human rights framework. This section provides a summary of the various treaties, covenants and agreements that form the foundation for a worldwide abolition movement. Finally, we offer a summary of some of the most pressing emerging issues framing discussions of capital punishment both globally and in the United States.
