Bias violence

Jeff Gruenewald, Brynn Schuetter and Taylor June

Chapter 4 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 48-62 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Research has found that some types of bias violence, or violence discriminately targeting victims based on their social group, are unique from more common, traditional forms of violence. It has also been suggested that bias violence may “hurt more” than parallel forms of violence as individuals are targeted simply for who they are, and because bias violence sends a message to entire segments of the population that they also may be vulnerable to such violence. This chapter reviews trends and patterns of bias violence from around the globe with a focus on bias homicide in the United States over the last few decades. Documenting the limitations of official data sources, attention is given to how alternative, open-source databases like the Bias Homicide Database can advance knowledge about bias violence. Ideas for expanding the scope of bias violence research to other targeted groups in the future are also offered.
