Juvenile violence

Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 100-121 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In 1995, crime experts forecasted a significant increase in juvenile involvement in violent crime in the years ahead based on dramatic increases of arrests of youths under 18 for murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault that began in 1984. This chapter uses juvenile arrest data as a proxy measure to examine juvenile involvement in violent crime over the 40-year period 1980-2020 to examine trends over time in the United States. The year 1980 predates the increase in juvenile violent crime arrests. Extending the analyses to 2020 enables us to examine juvenile involvement in violent crime in the 25 years following the experts’ forecasts of a rising escalation of violent crimes by youth under 18. In this chapter, analyzes focus on the four violent crimes (murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), as defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (2010, 2013, 2019). Sex and racial differences in juvenile arrest rates for violent crimes are examined. The implications of these findings are discussed.
