Violence against older adults
Lynn A. Addington
Chapter 8 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 122-134 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Since 2002, the World Health Organization has identified elder abuse as a problem of international importance and prioritized ways to prevent and respond to it. Despite this recognition, violence against older adults remains an under-researched topic. Understanding this victim population is challenged by the lack of definitional consensus around who is classified as an ‘older adult’ and what activities constitute ‘violence’ in this population. This chapter explores this issue by using these two concepts as an organizing structure. This chapter first examines ways older adults are defined in the literature and then considers a range of actions that constitute violence against older adults by summarizing current research on elder abuse as well as other violent crimes. As this handbook considers violence from an international perspective, this chapter also seeks to place violence against older adults in a global context.
