Chapter 9 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 135-154 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter comprehensively reviews intimate partner violence (IPV), addressing its definitions, prevalence across demographics and global regions and profound societal impact. It explores various typologies of IPV, encompassing classical forms such as physical, sexual and psychological violence, alongside less studied dynamics like violence against men and within non-heterosexual relationships. The discussion underscores IPV's complexity by analyzing risk and protective factors across ecological levels—individual, relational, community and cultural. Central to the chapter is the RESPECT framework endorsed by the World Health Organization, which sustains evidence-based interventions. Detailed effective programs, including Safe Dates, Dating Matters, Youth Relationships and Mom's Empowerment, illustrate successful strategies in IPV prevention. These initiatives integrate empowerment, community support and legal interventions to foster healthier relationship dynamics and combat IPV. The chapter emphasizes the necessity of tailored approaches for marginalized groups and advocates for culturally competent policies to address IPV globally.
