The role of cultural and creative industries in promoting regional well-being

Jordi Sanjuán

Chapter 10 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 190-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The cultural and creative industries (CCIs) are increasingly recognized as potential drivers of regional well-being, though quantitative evidence remains limited. This chapter conducts an empirical analysis to quantify CCIs’ impacts on well-being across European OECD regions. Using causal models and the Causal Forest machine learning algorithm, positive average impacts are identified in eleven well-being dimensions from the OECD's Better Life Index: access to services, civic engagement, community, education, environment, health, housing, income, jobs, life satisfaction, and safety. Notable impacts are seen in education, income, and environment, though significant regional variations need to be closely observed.
