Exploring artificial intelligence in creative regions: a literature review

Luciana Lazzeretti, Stefania Oliva and Niccolò Innocenti

Chapter 11 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 208-223 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Although artificial intelligence (AI) has spread in academic debate, theoretically and empirically, its application in specific domains, such as the cultural and creative economy, has been raising attention only recently. In order to enlarge this debate, the chapter aims to review the literature on AI in social sciences, specifically examining its interplay with creative regions, territorial dynamics, creativity, and heritage. Combining bibliometric analysis and a qualitative literature review, the chapter delineates the evolutionary trajectory of AI and creative regions, identifying recent trends in the literature and the most debated topics and tracing avenues for further research. The results of the analysis offer insights for both practitioners and policymakers to address the management of cultural and creative organizations in the scenario of the digital revolution and formulate specific policies for the development of creative places.
