Creative regions in digital worlds: an empirical analysis of creative design in video games creation

Alessandro Muscio and Michele Rinaldi

Chapter 16 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 300-315 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The video game industry is highly dynamic and marked by intense competition. Software developers, and sometimes console makers, are committed to creating new video games for gaming hardware that is more powerful than ever. While graphics power is important, the role of creative design thinking can be fundamental in developing successful, truly outstanding games. This chapter analyzes the game rankings and sales of a large sample of open world games released from 1980 to 2023. We study the influence of creative designers on games performance indicators. We show that creative designers can significantly influence the quality of released games, underscoring the importance of creative thinking in an industry typically viewed as being driven by technical and computing expertise.
