Creative clusters and sparse spaces: Manchester's creative industries and the geographies of deprivation and prosperity
Bruce S. Tether
Chapter 19 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 354-395 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Manchester is celebrated as a creative industries (CIs) success story, potentially rivalling London's dominance in the UK. This chapter examines the distribution of CIs across the Manchester city-region using employment and business data. While Manchester's CIs surpass those of comparable cities like Birmingham or Leeds, their distribution is uneven. Creative clusters thrive in the city centre, Salford Quays, and affluent southern areas extending to Cheshire East, but large northern and inner eastern areas show minimal CI presence, correlating with high deprivation and low prosperity. Addressing this spatial disparity is a key policy challenge.
