Pau Rausell-Köster
Chapter 2 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 22-41 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Historically regarded as an individual trait or divine inspiration, creativity has evolved into a critical factor for innovation and adaptation in modern societies. This chapter explores the multifaceted nature of creativity as a key driver of societal transformation and economic progress in creative regions. The discussion delves into the challenges of measuring creativity in creative regions, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive indices and tailored policy approaches to address territorial dynamics. It also investigates the transformative effects of digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) on the creative economy, noting both opportunities for democratization and productivity gains, as well as risks to originality, authorship, and economic equity. Creativity should be integrated into education systems, governance structures, and digital transitions to ensure its sustainable contribution to economic growth and societal advancement of creative regions.
