Chapter 21 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 418-433 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the sensitivity of creatives to the conditions of insecurity and violence in specific places. To achieve this, we utilize a unique dataset that contains information on the geographic location of mass shootings and apply Difference-in-Differences methods that account for heterogeneous effects and multiple treatment dates. Our results show that employment in the arts, entertainment, and recreation sector (NAICS 71) is disproportionately affected compared to overall employment. This is particularly evident at the zip code and census tract levels, and for incidents occurring in public spaces. These findings suggest that workers in creative industries are less attached to specific locations and more sensitive to the adverse shocks to amenities and productivity caused by violent events.
