A worldwide geography of creative regions
Rafael Boix-Domènech
Chapter 3 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 42-68 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
What is a creative region and where are the world's most creative regions located? The chapter defines the concept of the creative region and presents the first global mapping of creative regions. The methodology uses georeferenced microdata and a hexagonal grid to create pixel regions to overcome the limitations of administrative boundaries. The results show a high concentration of creative firms in Europe and North America, with other important clusters in South America, Asia and Australia, and of lesser importance in Africa. Finally, the limitations of the study are discussed, and future lines of research are opened.
